For us in Flachau, skiing is simply a part of life. We grew up here, amidst slopes, lifts, and huts, yet every ski day still feels special. Perhaps because we love seeing our home through the eyes of our guests. Or because there’s nothing more beautiful for us than making the first turns on freshly groomed slopes on a clear winter morning. As locals, we naturally have our routines, favorite spots, and a few tips we’d love to share with you. For us, skiing means much more than just accumulating kilometers on the slopes. It’s primarily about enjoyment, both on and off the slopes.
The perfect ski day starts early, but relaxed: For us, nothing happens without a good breakfast. Joseph traditionally starts the day with an espresso and a poppy seed roll, topped with ham and horseradish. Lena gets a fried egg from the egg station and puts it into a fresh cheese roll with sesame. Well-fortified, we pick up our ski passes at the reception and walk to the ski bus. Although the lift practically starts right outside our door, we sometimes deliberately choose a different starting point. Variety is key. Perhaps our favorite route will inspire you for your next ski day.
Timing is Everything
Starting point: Highport Flachauwinkl. If it’s up to Lena, we take the very first ascent and are already making the first turns in the Zauchensee ski area by 9 AM. As the slopes get busier around 11 AM, we’re already thinking about our first stop for refreshments. Our tip: the Burgstallhütte. This is where the locals meet, and we fortify ourselves with an “O’Power-Suppentopf” and a schnapps from Franz. Afterwards, freshly motivated, we continue: We cross the road by ski bus and enter the Flachauwinkl/Kleinarl ski area. From there, the “Panorama Link” takes us directly back to Flachau. This gondola ride is one of the most beautiful in the entire country for us: The view extending to the Großglockner captivates us anew every time.
The Perfect End
Finally, a glass of Prosecco at the Lisa Alm is simply a must for us. Here, you meet familiar faces, enjoy the last rays of sunshine, and let the ski day wind down in the best of moods. And then? For us as hosts, it’s back to everyday life. Or, on our days off, comfortably onto the sofa. However, we recommend a sauna session for you, so that your skier’s legs are fit again for new adventures tomorrow.
